Redefining Dry Eye Care

In 2015, Dr. Rynerson, in partnership with Dr. Henry D. Perry, published “DEBS – A Unification Theory for Dry Eye and Blepharitis” in the well-respected Dove Press journal, Clinical Ophthalmology. This white paper is the definitive treatise on Dry Eye Blepharitis Syndrome and upset decades of conventional wisdom of what dry eye disease actually is; the cause, the treatment protocol, and, ultimately, the cure for this often-debilitating disease. Previous to this publication, dry eye disease was widely thought to be an amorphous combination of many different afflictions with many different causes and no cure or even a standard treatment regimen to speak of.

Biofilm Discovery

In 2011, Dr. Rynerson discovered the presence of a biofilm, similar to the plaque on a person’s teeth, on the anterior of the eyelid. This biofilm is present in all humans almost from birth and builds over time. Harmful bacteria live under this biofilm and produce increasing quantities of bacterial virulence factors. Over the course of a human lifetime, this toxicity results in what Dr. Rynerson coined “The Four Stages of Blepharitis”; follicular inflammation, Meibomian gland dysfunction, aqueous insufficiency, and finally, lid destruction. Essentially, what we think of as “dry eye disease” is actually “biofilm-induced inflammatory dry eye” and is a late stage of blepharitis, very similar to gingivitis and gum disease in a person’s mouth.

Dr. Rynerson then revolutionized the treatment and prevention of dry eye disease when he invented a lid debridement device called BlephEx. He soon discovered that performing eyelid exfoliations, using BlephEx, had a profound impact on patients’ blepharitis (dry eye) symptoms. This realization sent him on a quest to better understand and ultimately conquer the true cause of this elusive disease.

Dry Eye Insights

In 2022, Dr. Rynerson authored, “Dry Eyes – The Cause, The Cure,” a book written for laypeople to help them understand what is happening to their eyes as they age and inform them that they don’t have to live in pain.

Dr. Rynerson has dedicated his life and career to solving the biofilm enigma. Today, Dr. Rynerson owns BlephEx and also founded The Centers for Dry Eye with clinics in Nashville, TN, and Atlanta, GA, dedicated exclusively to eliminating biofilm-induced inflammation. By creating and implementing final solution treatment modalities based on this new understanding, he has brought relief to thousands of patients who had all but given up on ever finding a resolution to their suffering, allowing them to start enjoying life again.
